We were proud to have had the opportunity to work with the Fairfield County, South Carolina library system to create their new logo/brandmark and website.  They came to us with a unique idea that we were excited to bring to life!

The first rule of design is that all design must have a purpose.  The second rule is to listen to your client.  During our initial discussion with the client, the most important concepts in this case were history and legacy.  The main branch of the Fairfield County library is located in a building which exemplified both history and legacy.  Developing a concept which encompassed the history of the building and the colonial legacy of the region – along with an element of modern design – was key to creating a memorable brandmark for such an important landmark.

We utilized the building cupola as the key element to tie the brandmark to the rich history and legacy of the library while maintaining a bond with the colonial heritage of the region.  A modern upward moving swoosh carries the eye to the name and finishes the concept with a forward look and feel.  The deep red color coupled with the black and white cupola reinforces the historic to modern feeling necessary to appeal to a wide age demographic.

Special thank you to the good folks at the Fairfield County Library System for choosing us to work with them on this challenging and enjoyable project!

Why Should I Hire a Professional Graphic Designer? https://c2communications.net/hire-a-professional-graphic-designer/ Wed, 08 Aug 2018 21:01:55 +0000 https://c2communications.net/?p=2252 One of the most common mistakes new businesses make is cutting corners on their identity.  Often times, when we are engaged by a client for marketing services (i.e. collateral materials, website development, etc.) and when we review their assets, we find issues with their logo (also known as a brandmark.) One of the most common mistakes new businesses make is cutting corners on their identity.  Often times, when we are engaged by a client for marketing services (i.e. collateral materials, website development, etc.) and when we review their assets, we find issues with their logo (also known as a brandmark.) Your brandmark is important because it is the face and identity of your business.  It should be created by a professional graphic designer who understands proper file formats, licensing, and is willing to provide you with rights to the final artwork.

Engaging a qualified graphic designer from the beginning can avoid some very costly issues down the road.  Let’s take a closer look.

Relevant Imagery

A professional graphic designer is trained in strategies to ensure the proper imagery, colors, and text are used to reach your target market(s).  Reaching your target market(s) is the first step in getting your business off the ground. Designers are artists, but artists are NOT designers.  A professional graphic designer will create artwork that influences how people see, feel and react to your message.  Every element of design must have a purpose, otherwise it is just decoration and may confuse or distract from your message.  Most of the time, less is more in graphic design.

Proper Formats

Hiring a professional graphic designer ensures you will receive your logo/brandmark files in the proper formats. Brandmarks must be designed to work at all sizes, from a business card to a billboard.  Creating the brandmark in the wrong format will severely limit its scalability and usability across multiple mediums.

Original Artwork

You must make sure the artwork provided to you is original.  If the artwork is pirated, stock art, or unlicensed clip art, the first indication of a problem will likely be a legal notice or lawsuit.  This can result in your reputation being compromised and the artwork needing to be changed, recreated or licensed.  We have had clients come to us with brandmarks they have purchased from an online vendor that “guaranteed the artwork was original and properly licensed” only to later find out it was not.  This costly mistake can lead to hefty fines and, in worst cases, closing of the business.

Do you need a professional logo or are you unsure if your current logo meets all of the above criteria?

Casto Communications is a full-service strategic marketing, online marketing and public relations firm.  We have professional graphic designers on staff to create artwork that targets your audience with your message to drive consumers to consider your product or service.  Contact us today for a free marketing asset evaluation.

An SSL certificate creates an encrypted connection designed to protect sensitive information.  You know you are on a website that has an SSL certificate when you see https:// in the URL bar.

We always recommend SSL certificates for websites that process financial transactions or collect personal information. This includes all e-commerce websites.

As of July 2018, the web browser Google Chrome will more prominently identify websites that do not have an SSL certificate.  Visitors will now see the words “not secure” next to the URL of websites that do not have a properly configured SSL certificate.

Because this could act as a deterrent to anyone visiting a website using Google Chrome, we recommend that all websites have an SSL certificate, even if they do not process financial transactions, sell products or request personal information.  Although Google Chrome is the only browser that is changing the way it handles websites without an SSL, we expect the rest (i.e. Safari, Firefox, Edge, etc.) to eventually follow suit.

If your website does not have an SSL certificate, don’t fret.  The average cost of an SSL certificate is $75/year depending on the provider. You will need to re-new it annually. We can help you purchase an SSL certificate from a trusted provider and properly configure it for you as well.

We are offering our customers who are subscribing to our Ongoing Support complimentary SSL certificate configuration until July 15th.  Simply e-mail or call us and we will walk you through the process of purchasing your certificate and then configure it on your website.  If we did not build your website, or, if you are not subscribing to Ongoing Support, we will configure your SSL certificate for you at a reduced rate.

Have additional questions about an SSL certificate or websites in general?  Feel free to call or e-mail us.

As you probably have already heard, Facebook is making significant changes to how news is delivered to your news feed.  What is this change and what does it mean for your business?

In a nutshell, people who “Like” your page will see less of your organic Facebook posts in their news feeds.  Facebook feels people in general desire to be more “social”.  Therefore, content from your “Friends” will be prioritized over posts from “Brands” or “Pages” you like.

While this move has some businesses panicking, we are not as concerned for our clients as we have always recommended that Social Media be a complement to an overall marketing strategy and not a replacement.  This move, however, will significantly affect companies who rely primarily on Social Media as a primary marketing strategy.

If you have retained us to work with you on a regular basis, you can consider yourself in good shape and here is why:

  1. Your website is your company’s online storefront. If we are managing the ongoing search engine optimization (SEO) of your website, your Social Media posts are designed to give you short lived boosts for SEO.  The 2018 changes in how Facebook delivers news to your news feed will not affect this.
  2. Many of our clients run Facebook Ads. We take a strategic approach when designing and managing your Facebook ads campaigns.  The new changes will NOT affect how Facebook Ads are delivered.
  3. If you’ve followed our advice, you are not using Social Media as your primary marketing strategy. Therefore, having your organic Facebook posts delivered less often will have minimal – if any – adverse effect on your overall marketing strategy.

Many clients have asked if they should still post on their business Facebook page. The answer is, “YES”!  Remember, this change will not affect what people see if they visit your page directly.  And, your posts will still be delivered, just not as often.

The biggest advantage to using Facebook for your business is the SEO benefit and Facebook Ads, which offer an affordable and targeted option to get your message out to potential customers.

If you are not already working with us on ongoing SEO for your website or Facebook ads, please give us a call. Both are becoming more and more important, especially since this latest change with Facebook.  Let’s set up a free telephone consultation to discuss how we can help you achieve your online goals in 2018!

Optimizing your Social Media accounts is a good practice for both your personal brand and your business.  Below are some tips on optimizing your personal LinkedIn profile.  These tips are current as of 8/30/17 and are subject to change at any time.  LinkedIn adds new features and changes processes on a regular basis, so it is important to review any new tutorials or information made available to you by LinkedIn.

  1. Profile: Complete your profile to achieve All-Star status:
    • Profile photo
    • Include industry and location
    • Add description to your current position. Try bulleted lists that incorporate relevant keywords for things like job duties.
    • Include at least two past positions
    • Include education details
    • List at least three skills
    • Obtain at least 50 connections
  2. Contact Information: Check all profile contact information to make sure it is accurate.  All fields should be completed (website, phone, address, email, twitter, date of birth).
  3. Company Connection: Be sure that the jobs listed in your EXPERIENCE section connect to the correct company.  It’s easy to connect to the wrong company when multiple companies have the same name.
  4. Groups: Join and participate in relevant groups to expand your network and improve the search optimization of your profile.
  5. Connections: Expand your network.  Try searching your email contacts for possible connections.   Click the MY NETWORK link and look for the PEOPLE YOU MAY KNOW section for most streamlined way to request connections.
  6. Review your account settings: (https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/66?lang=en) to select the best settings for things like what information can be seen about you and how others may contact you.
  7. Give and collect endorsements: Giving skill endorsements is a great way to keep your name in front of contacts.  Collecting endorsements validates your skills.
  8. Recommendations: Ask others to recommend you.   The RECOMMENDATIONS section of your PROFILE includes a link for “Ask to be Recommended” which you can use to ask specific connections to write a brief recommendation.
  9. Public Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/public-profile/settings  View your public profile the way others see it then adjust settings based on your preference of what you want others to see.
  10. Profile URL: Create a custom URL for your LinkedIn Public Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/public-profile/settings
  11. Articles: You can use LinkedIn to post blog-like articles. Look for the “WRITE AN ARTICLE” button in the status update section.
  12. Updates: Post frequent status updates. Like and share updates of your connections.
  13. Samples of Work: You can upload videos and presentations to show samples of your work, services, or product information.
  14. Jobs: Search for employment (note: posting jobs is handled through a company page).

Most people are intimidated because they do not feel they have the time to commit to developing their personal LinkedIn profiles.  The best way to approach this is to not do everything all at once.  Rather, set aside a few minutes each day to work on optimizing your profile and making connections.  Social Media profiles are always a work in progress.  Good luck!

Groundbreaking Commemorates New Facility Designed to Diversify Offerings and Create Jobs

(Micanopy, FL) – Goodwin Company, pioneers of River-Recovered® heart pine and cypress, proudly announce the groundbreaking of their new facility. The expansion is part of a partnership with Heritage Wood Finishing Company and will bring new jobs to the region.

“Goodwin Company has experienced steady growth and success here in Alachua County,” said Carol Goodwin, President of Goodwin Company. “We look forward to contributing to years of future success in this region.”

Goodwin Company is active in the effort to spur growth opportunities for the region’s manufacturing industry as a whole. The company has been a steady presence on the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce’s Advanced Manufacturing Council, which has been instrumental in regional efforts to develop a manufacturing talent pipeline and advance policy decisions that support industry growth.

“We are elated to celebrate the growth of Goodwin Company and the job opportunities it will bring to the region,” said Susan Davenport, President/CEO of the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce. “We look forward to supporting the future success of manufacturing companies like Goodwin Company here in Alachua County.”

Goodwin Company was the first reclaimed wood manufacturer to produce engineered flooring in the United States (at the time, all other domestic companies were importing it from overseas). Today, consumer demand for pre-finished and custom color floors continues to grow. As a result, Goodwin has partnered with Heritage Wood Finish Company to develop proprietary, custom finishes specifically formulated for resinous River-Recovered® wood. The new facility will enable Goodwin to offer a variety of finish and color options, while providing acclimatized storage for engineered and factory finished stock.

“Our customers spoke and we have responded,” said Goodwin. “‘Install Ready’ flooring is in high demand. However, pre-finishing River-Recovered® wood is a challenge because of its resinous nature. Our proprietary, specially formulated coatings – one of which is second in hardness only to diamonds – allows us to satisfy the needs of customers who do not want to finish their floor on site. So, whether someone would like a clear pre-finished floor, or a custom color, we are now able to deliver!”

According to Goodwin, the Florida Small Business Development Center at the University of North Florida (FSBDC at UNF) played an integral role in the expansion.

“We’ve been working with Goodwin Company over the course of several years to help identify new market opportunities,” explains Dr. Phillip Geist, MBA, CBCP, CGBP, Area Director for the FSBDC at UNF. “We conducted a financial analysis and developed strategic and business plans designed to diversify Goodwin’s offerings to meet customer demand. This, in turn, will create new jobs and further contribute to the economic vitality of the region.”

Goodwin is partnering with the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce to conduct the official groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, December 9 at 10 a.m. at the Goodwin Company facility located at 106 SW 109th Place, Micanopy, FL 32667. Media is invited and encouraged to attend. For more information, please visit http://heartpine.com/rsvp/.
